Moby Grape, The Matrix *Mint 97*

Moby Grape had the potential to be one of the greatest San Francisco bands of the psychedelic rock genre. They were talented writers and players and deserve more than just a footnote in the history books. The Matrix, was an early small San Francisco club that only held around 150 was managed by Jefferson Airplanes’ Marty Balin. Together these factors add up to a real “sleeper” of a poster. The central image for this poster is an illustration by late 19th – mid 20th century German Illustrator Heinrich Kley. In this illustration, the Greco –Roman deity Bacchus, is portrayed as the source of great drunkenness and debauchery. Great stuff! Because this venue only held around 150 people, very few posters were needed to promote an event. This is the finest quality example of this poster that we have ever seen and it could be many, many years before an opportunity like this presents itself again.
