Grateful Dead, Longshoreman's Hall (Trips Festival Handbill) *Mint 95*

The Trips Festival was one of the earliest major events of the psychedelic scene in the San Francisco in the sixties. 1965 produced several groundbreaking events, including the Charlatans groundbreaking run at the Red Dog Saloon and The Pranksters Acid Tests. Also happening  were The Family Dog’s early shows at Longshoreman’s Hall and Bill Grahams Mime Troupe Benefits’. However it wasn’t until January of 1966 when the all the players came together at this pivotal 3-day event.

Conceived by Prankster Stewart Brand, organized by Bill Graham, and fueled by Owsley, the Trips Festival was in essence a widely attended Acid Test that featured San Francisco Rock bands, lightshows, Film, overhead projection, and various performance oddities. This immersion course in the psychedelic experience sparked the events that immediately followed, most notably, Bill Graham’s legacy at the Fillmore and Chet Helms Family Dog productions at the Avalon Theater.

This extremely rare flyer for the event is one of the hardest pieces of Trips festival ephemera to obtain.  This piece is the BG version and the calligraphy was done by Peter Bailey , who is known for creating the very first BG Fillmore poster. This piece surfaces much less frequently than the Wes Wilson Handbill. A true treasure from one of the most famous events of the San Francisco Psychedelic scene, a super rare find. This handbill is featured in the Art of The Fillmore on page 25.
